Salam faces Fry at York Hall

Explosive light heavyweight prospect Tony Salam has been matched with former Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Courtney Fry on promoter Frank Maloney's York Hall show taking place on February 1.

It's a promising match up between Chadwell Heath-based Salam, unbeaten in seven pro fights, and the former Repton club amateur Fry, who has lost just once in his 11 pro outings.

The 32-year-old's one pro defeat was a points setback against Ovill McKenzie over four rounds in 2005 but last year, Salam scored a points win over former Commonwealth champion McKenzie when they clashed at Doncaster.

The victor at York Hall will be pressing for a British title meeting against the winner of the top of the bill duel when Peter Haymer, faces light heavyweight champion Tony Oakey.

Oakey, who saved his career by becoming British champion last year with a last round stoppage of Steve Spartacus, makes his second defence.

The pair met at York Hall in June 2005, with English champion at the time, Haymer pulling off a controversial single-point victory that angered Oakey, who brought new life to his career after moving to to the TKO gym in east London to train under Johnny Eames.

Also featured on the Friday night York Hall promotion are local prospects, former Dagenham amateur Ross Hewitt and Newham's Jamie Radford.

Scott Walford, Lee Cook, John McDermott, Akash Bhattia and Henry Castle are named for action on Maloney's first York Hall show of the year.
